History: “These mushroom soup mugs are very popular. They also have a very interesting history behind them. In the 70s and 80s, gas stations would offer "free" gifts with a purchase of gas in the UK. Customers would earn tokens for buying gas and eventually they would be able to get a free gift. One of the gifts that were offered were these soup mugs. The practice was eventually outlawed because gas stations were actually increasing prices to compensate for the costs of the free gifts.”
